I just downloaded the Windows XP Professional upgrade - my
desktop originally had Windows 98. After the download was
complete, all of the music we had stored on the hard drive
was gone, the scanner is no longer operable, the DVD movie
player doesn't work, etc., etc., etc. I uninstalled the
program to restore our files.

Since this is a one-use CD, can I save it to re-install on
another computer, or return it to the store where it was
purchased?

I have tried to get answers through Microsoft support, but
don't have the many, many hours it is taking to try to get
through. I would appreciate any help someone out there
can give. I'm very upset that my $200 program may be
useless now.

What you are saying just doesn't sound right.

You say "I just downloaded the Windows XP Professional upgrade" then later
say "I uninstalled the program".

If you start with Windows 98 and wish to upgrade it to Windows XP, you need
to do an upgrade using a Windows XP upgrade CD - either an Upgrade version,
or a full retail version - both versions come in a box with Microsoft Logos
on (so there is no "download", but that may just be your term...). If this
is not the case then it does not sound as though you actually have a Windows
XP product from Microsoft. You could possibly have a Windows XP OEM version
(for computer manufacturers) which does have a hologram image on, but you
can't use this for an Upgrade as it won't let you. The process involved
provides for application and hardware compatibility checks to ensure you
have least problems after the upgrade.

The CD - assuming it is legit - is for use on One computer for one upgrade.
The CD itself is not a one use CD - it does not "self destruct" or cease to
function. IE you can rerun the process to your hearts content, so long as
you only register the XP upgrade only once, but once you register the XP
version you have installed you have committed to the upgrade on that
computer so the CD cannot be used on any other computer. If you have not
registered the installed XP, you have no issues. You can use the CD on
another computer if the upgrade fails. It is possible that some older
computers fail upgrades because of many reasons: virus infections, spyware,
inadequate or incompatible hardware and so on. If you did register your XP
install and have since killed it by going back to Windows 98, you will still
be able to upgrade again so long as it is on the same computer (License
Terms and Conditions).

Some clarification is in order:

Did you run the upgrade from a MS Windows XP CD?
Does the CD appear to be legitimate?
IE did it come in a standard retail box?
Does it have the hologram image on the CD?

When XP was installed, what were the issues you faced? Often a handful of
issues can seem daunting, but when tackled one at a time can be overcome.

Did you run the upgrade check prior to running the upgrade? If you bung the
CD in, it should auto start and on the program that pops up there is an
option to check your computer for upgrade compatibility. It will ask to
connect to the internet to get the latest updates for program
compatibility - let it do so.

So, please post back with the above information and any other that you feel
is relevant.
