Does anyone know if there is a way to retrieve the product key from the
numeric code that is shown under the "Registered To" in General under control
panel?
When I first installed XP, I wrote that number on my XP cd, thinking it was
the key code (why do they put another number there!!), threw out all the
paper that came with my license. Since then, had a computer crash, tried to
re-install, discovered that that is not the product key that can be used to
re-install, so now all I have is a screen print of that generated code and an
original cd to prove I own a real copy.

The Product Key has not been on that screen since Windows 95.

If Windows is no longer installed, the available tools are no help.
The Product Key is not on the CD at all.

If Windows XP is retail contact Microsoft:

If Windows XP is OEM, the Product Key should be on a sticker affixed to the
computer.
Otherwise contact the seller, Microsoft may not be able to help with OEM.

If your original documentation has been discarded, you may not be able to
get them replaced.

In the future keep the originals and keep them in the same place you kept
that worthless screenshot.

Is the second segment (3 characters) of the product i.d. code OEM?

If it is then your Windows XP is an OEM version and you need to
contact the OEM that you purchased it from.

If the second segment is numeric then your Windows XP is a retail or
volume licensed version and you should contact Microsoft as per the
link that Jupiter Jones gave you.

Good luck
