i have a bit of a problem. a few weeks ago my computer crashed and i had to
re-install everything. once i did that i've been getting this pop up that
tells me to activate windows in 30 days. My windows is all ready activated
and once the days passed i couldnt get back on! i just re-installed
everything again and now i want to know what do i do to prevent this from
happening again? I dont get why it's doing this and i want to know how to
stop it. My windows is activated and there's no reason i should be getting
this. thank you.

the same thing happened to me on another OS, I just re-activated it.

Start > all programs > activate windows.

Go to C:\Windows\System32 and copy wpa.dbl and wpa.bak to a floppy. When
you reinstall Windows copy them bak.

Is it that simple? I tried that first but it still asked me for activation .

I even waited till after the 30 days tried again, got into my user account
and tried again. After trying several 'hacks' from the XP release days (like
your suggestion) I gave up and activated.

Whats your secret? ( I installed the OS as a trouble shooting platform
because it was easier to repair the other HDD this way and did not want to
use up another 'activation' for a temporary OS/account.

I have no secret. If it asks I activate.

If it asks I activate.

Right. I did once, then it asked me again like it did for SM in the original
post, otherwise if I were looking for free hacks I'd be elsewhere.

It sounded like you were suggesting to copy a healthy activation .wpa file
to an OS which its .wpa file has become corrupt/broken/whatever. In the XP
beta in 2001 this would reactivate a unactivated XP OS. If this is what you
suggested I am saying I tried it and did not work (again, I copied a backup
WPA file to a ALREADY activated XP OS).

No, I'm talking about keeping the wpa files for a particular machine to
reuse on the same machine.

So am I. I tried to use them on the same OS..

Let me repeat in case I wasn't clear...
I installed an OS as a temporary account just to fix another HDD, It asked
to activate, I eventually DID activat XP and sometime later it asked me
again?? Why? Why should I use an activation transaction (as they are limited)
because of an error. I knew of the XP beta hack (where any WPA copy would do
but I used the original form this
OS/previous-activation/box/machine/HDD/house/country/Universe).

The WPA became corrupt somehow, I RESTORED the original WPA file but did not
seem to work. I activated again - the normal way - wasting yet another
activation transaction because of a MS error.

All I'm asking of you is if you know why that happened to us and if you can
verify that RESTORING the ORIGINAL WPA does work....and stop being such a
mall cop please...
