I recently formatted my hard drive, and completely
reinstalled WinXP Pro.

Ever since, my computer "locks up" at random times; my
mouse pointer will not move, and all keyboard functions
are not inoperable. If I wait several seconds, the screen
will go dark, and then it comes back on,but the graphics
are greatly enlarged, and the colors are distorted. But I
can continue doing what I was doing before the crash even
with the modified screen.

I am able to restart, and I see a Microsft error message"
"Windows System Error: Microsoft has detected and
recovered from a Device Failure. Plese save your work
and reboot to restore full functionality"

I should also say that at some point, I see another error
message "There is not enough room to show all of the
items you have added to the Start Menu. To display them,
please choose smaller menu icons, choose a smaller number
of items, or unpin some items"

I am able to restart, and get back into my normal Desktop
and I note that one of my icons (3M Post It Notes
reminder program) has been repositioned on the desktop.

At this point, superimposed on my Deaktop is the message:
"This system has recovered from a serious error - and I
must choose between send and don't send this error"
message back to Microsoft.

Because of the change of the icon for the 3M program, is
this a clue that this program is at the root of my
problem?

Could my mouse be the cause of this? I recently changed
from a Logitech mouse to a Microsoft Cordless Mouse.

I know this is long, but thanks for helping me, (as you
people have done so in the past)

Try uninstalling the display driver and reinstalling it. You might want to check the manufacturer's sight for updated drivers
