I've lost my Wordpad on this computer.

Doing a "search" I find a number of Wordpad files but am unsure what to do
with them to restore this nifty little feature.

Thanks in advance for any assistance rendered.

Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll
down to Item No. 308. In the right column, click on "Restore
WordPad.exe" to download the fix, then run the repair.

Type in Start, Run:

%programfiles%\Windows NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe

If you are sure that the wordpad.exe file is not on your machine. You can
re-install Wordpad plus the associated Start Menu shortcuts for Wordpad by
uisinng the wordpad.inf file.

In the Run dialog box type INF. This should open the "c:\windows\inf"
folder. Locate 'wordpad.inf' and right-click to select Install. When
prompted for you XP CD, insert the Windows XP CD or point to
"c:\windows\servicepackfiles".

Hi,

If memory serves I used to be able to find WordPad like this:

Start
All Programs
Accessories

And it would show up there.

Your solution does open WordPad on the computer. The question is, how can I
restore it to the way I used to find it.

Thanks,

Dbm

Hi William,

As you can see in a prior post with Carey I am able to open WordPad but
can't figure out how to restore it to it's place under "start"

I tried your solution as well.

I can find wordpad.inf under C:\WINDOWS\INF. Following your instructions
goes fine until I right click on "install". At that point C:\WINDOWS\INF
blinks and re-appears but I get no request for my XP CD or any other request
for additional files.

Your thoughts please?

Thanks,

Dbm

Since wordpad is working then all you need is to create a shortcut for
wordpad here:

'C:\Documents and Settings\<YourUserName>\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories"

Point Wordpad's shortcut to "C:\Program Files\Windows
NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe"

This will put word on the Start Menu where it should be located.

Made a mistake, wordpad's shortcut should be located at:
"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories"

Then all users will be able to start Wordpad from the Start Menu.

We're getting closer but still no joy.

The shortcut for wordpad does not appear under any of the files located at
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories

I've got accessibility, entertainment, scanner and camera wizard,
communications and system tools. All of those are file folders with the
exception of the wizard. Looking inside the folders find no reference to
wordpad at all.

What I meant in my previous post was to create a shortcut for Wordpad in
this folder:

"C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories"

Here are the steps required to create a shortcut for Wordpad on the Start
Menu.

1. Navigate to "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu\Programs\Accessories"
2. Right-click on a blank area in the folder that I provided and select New
Shortcut.
3. Browse to "C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories" and select the file
"wordpad.exe"
4. Type in "Wordpad" for the shortcut name and finish the wizard.
5. Open Start Menu and see if Wordpad is now on the Start Menu. Start button

Okay, I am with you until I am supposed to select the "wordpad.exe" file.
There is no such file under "C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories.

Sorry to be so dense on this.

Dbm

OK, there should be a wordpad.exe file located here,
"c:\windows\system32\dllcache". Copy the wordpad.exe file from this location
and paste the file to:

"C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories"

Now create the wordpad shortcut described in my earlier post.

BTW, if you perform a search for wordpad.exe, where are the wordpad.exe
files located? Ensure you have System files, hidden files and folders, and
sub folders selected in the
"More advanced option" for the Search options.

Success!

WordPad is right where it should be.

Thank you for your patience and assistance in helping me work through this.

According to my search the wordpad.exe files are located in six files.

C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$

There are three listings in a C:|Windows\Prefetch area

C:\Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories

and

C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386.

Again,

Thank you for your help!
