I have a Dell Dimension 4100 running Windows 2000 Pro, and
I am attempting to upgrade to Win XP Pro, however when I
run setup from within win 2k, it goes through the initial
setup tasks and then it reboots for the first time, the
Windows xp installation automatically runs, and I get the
message about inspectin hardware config, the black screen
has the little dotted line at the bottom that says it's
about to continue windows xp installation, but the bar
never fills up, and the installation never procedes. the
only way out of this is to hard reset the computer.
HELP!

Greetings --

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp)

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win2K.

Additionally, run Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you
have any incompatible hardware components or applications.
