Windows xp Pro Thumbnails Problem

Can any one help
I cant seem to get the thumbnails to display properly in my pic folders
it shows them in a greyish colours
I'm using windows xp pro
 
I have a shiny brand new Sony Vaio, and everything seems to work just fine,
except for this tiny problem. This fix they are suggesting looks like it
could be one of those things where something goes wrong, and now, instead of
just a few file types not showing correctly, something very bad happens.
Is there a more foolproof way to fix this minor problem?

For a single thumbnail, right click on thumbnail and choose "refresh thumbnail".

For a folder. Open folder, click 'edit' on the toolbar, and choose "select
all". Then click on 'file' and choose 'refresh thumbnail".

Try this.
