Windows Xp Pro - No Safe Mode

I tried to get into safe mode by the usual method i.e holding down the F8 key
before windows startup.

Result - normal logon screen . Further attempts produced the same result.

Suggestions please .
 
Don't hold the F8 key down. Keep tapping it instead.

What does "unable to logon" mean? Remember, we can't see your computer.
If you mean that you can't see your particular account, do Ctrl-Alt-Del
twice to get the classic logon box. Then type in your name/password.
