Windows XP Pro Networking Issue

I Want to be able to view file from any one of my three PCs.

I have 3 PCs running Windows XP Pro SP2. They are connected through a D-Link
DI624 router and share a broadband connection. ZoneAlarm Pro is the firewall
and there is a firewall inside the router. Using Norton SystemWorks Premier
2005 as the Anti-Virus. The first PC (A), a desktop is able to view the other
2 PCs (B and C). A also has IIS installed and enable. B is a desktop and is
not able to access A. Receives error message "network-name is not accessible.
You might not have permission to use the network resource. Contact the
administrator of the server to find out if you have access permission. The
network path was not found." B is able to see C and access files on C. C is
a laptop that is connected wirelessly. C is able to see A and B in the
network. But only able to access files on B. C receives the same error
message as B, when attempting to access A.

I verified that Simple file sharing and the guest accounts are active.

In summary, A is able to access B and C. B and C are not able to access A.

Is there a solution?

Mac,

Did you enable ZoneAlarm for file sharing, and identify each of the other two
computers in the Local / Trusted Zone? That's the most common cause of this
problem.

Chuck

Thank you for the reply. PC A and C was not listed in the trusted zone of
B. I have added them.

Where do I enable file sharing for ZoneAlarm? Is it within ZoneAlarm?

Mac,

For ZA Free, all Local Zone computers have file sharing enabled by default. For
ZA Pro, besides setting the Local Zone, you have to enable File Sharing in the
Local Zone. What type, and version, of ZA do you have?

I have ZA Pro version 5.5.062 (the latest updates have been applied).

OK, Mac,

Get out your ZA User Manual, and turn to page 65. Look at Table 5-3. For your
computer to act as a server (share files and / or printers), you need to allow
NetBIOS incoming and outgoing. This requires you to be at Low Security level in
the Trusted Zone.

Now turn to pages 56 - 57. This indicates that the default Security level for
Trusted Zone is medium. Medium allows your computer to act as a client (access
shares on other computers), but not as a server (allow other computers to access
its shares). You need to set the Trusted Zone Security level to Low.

Thanks Chuck

I had incoming NetBIOS blocked on the PC A. Everything is working now.

Kewl, Mac. Thanks for the update.

My "New" tab won't work when click on either 'Question' or
'General comment' at this newsgroup. I came here via the
Windows Help link, from my DeskTop Help. There's a new window
that opens on the first click but there's no message window.

Consequently I have no choice but to jump into one or more of
the existing threads here (via 'Reply') and hope that one of
their members will see my post.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Celeron 2.66 GHz, 256 MB RAM, Win XP2 Pro, SP2, 1 HD (40 GB) -
split into 2 logical drives, each apprx. 50% used.
----------------------------------------------------------------

Two related problems:

1. Is there some simple way (Explorer, Registry entry, batchfile,
macro, etc.) which could be used to alert users on a small network
whenever a computer has been turned on and is now on the net?

Is there maybe an event log or similar created at the just turned-
on computer, for example, that could be auto-sent to DeskTop of 1
or more of the computers already online?

2. I tried to monitor the above type event by keeping a small
Explorer MS Home window open to see when a new comp comes on line.

Unfortunately there are at least 2 problems with this expedient
(at least, at this computer):

(a) The list in the window apparently does not update automa-
tically, regardless of whether or not the window is 'active'-
as when click on Title bar. Consequently I have to refresh it
manually whenever I think a computer may have come on line.

My memory's not to hot anymore but I thought that some time
back I DID see it auto-update.

(b) This morning I briefly turned on Comp #1 downstairs. Then I
shut it off and went upstairs to turn on Comp #2. When I opened
the Explorer MS Home window, I saw BOTH computers in the listing.

Clicking on #1 of course produced an error message - because it
was off. However, #1 remained in the listing, even after refresh.

I don't see how this could possibly be "normal". Could it maybe
be due to 'slow response', some memory problem, to many files on
the system and some limit in some Registry setting?

The reason I speculate on 'slow response' is that after I
finished typing this post here offline in Notepad and closed it,
the MS Home window instantly updated and now there is only this
one computer in the listing.

Any help on 1 and/or clues on 2?

Ted,

My condolences to you for your lack of functionality in the newsgroup.

I wouldn't waste time checking Windows Explorer (My Network Places) for a minute
by minute status of what's online. The browser display (which is what you're
looking at) could be off by anywhere from 6 - 52 minutes.

Try "ping -t OtherComputer" in a command window. If you're using static IP
addresses, and can ping by address, this will work best. If you're using
dynamic (DHCP) addresses, and the name expires from cache, this will be a
problem.

Thanx for the ultra-quick solution. Works like a charm. Now for a
little batch file to wrap it all up...

Took 3 tries before realized correct "othercomputer" name derived
from "Properties" of comp in the 'MS Home' window listing. That is,
it was NOT the name in the listing itself, which was longer and
actually a "comment" entry in "Properties".

Had to drop out to DOS prompt to see the error message, by the way.
Then panicked 'til noticed/used "-n count" in lieu of "-t".

If I ever run into a long "othercomputer" name, unless otherwise
advised, Ill presume it's OK/necessary to use quotes around it.

Incidentally, that's a super blog site

you have there. Just spent an hour downloading a bunch. Been before
and be back again. Did sign in.

In meantime, thanks again. Got some more 'pinging' to do...

-----------------------------------

Hang on! Just noticed something here about a 'Network Monitoring'
program:

Title: "QUERY: Network Monitoring" in Windows XP Networking and
the Web. The query was posted on 6/23/2006. A link was offered.
The whole reply reads as follows:

Yes - I have just asked this same question somewhere else, and
got a perfect answer:

NTop Xtra

You can get it here:

http://www.openxtra.co.uk/downloads/ntop-download.php

It looks a little complicated, but gives you EVERYTHING you need,
it's GNU but has been ported to Windows, so it's FREE!

Enjoy.

Dst.

---------------------------------------------------------------

I'm wondering, is the link genuine or a bogey. How to tell?
Don't want to get 'rootkitted', from what I just found out
via your site.

Ted,

I'll check NTop out, but for trusted and widely used, check out PingPlotter.

Roger. Appreciate - and will do.

OK, Ted,

I spent a few minutes reading about NTop-XTRA, and it appears to be a
significantly useful tool. Quite a few good mentions of it, from folks with way
more experience here than I. No negative mentions in any forum that I could
find.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/12/download-software-selectively.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/12/download-software-selectively.html

Nonetheless, I downloaded it to a Quarantine drive on my main computer, and ran
a couple scans against it. Negative.

So, I just moved it into my install library, and will probably install it on my
portable computer tomorrow.

Having said all of that, I suspect that PingPlotter may be more along the lines
of what you will use most immediately. So please let us know what you find out
from using it. PP is a most useful tool, one of the few that I have purchased,
and it was quite worth the purchase price.

Got it. Glad it turned out OK. Thanks for that. PP working fine. Got a slight
altercation to attend to below. Sorry. Be back...

OK. I'm back. Thanks very much for checking all this
out. Really appreciate.

(I say! even this "Reply" tab is acting up on my now. Got
to click 2 or 3 times and go thru the loop before I
finally get that window. I know now that there's something
amiss w/ the Network and maybe the Service Provider and
just wonder if this might be the cause)

Just read the advisory "Download Software Selectively"
at your site . Covers it pretty well. Been doing similar,
actually. Bit paranoid myself. Glad to hear it's healthy.

Not a power user; just helping out an old friend here
and thought it prudent to ask the "experts" first.
Relieved it turned out OK.

This comp is not that well-protected yet (I'm trying).
From recent articles, etc., it appears that, aside from
the latest 'image' scare, one can now get compromised
by simply 'clicking' on a malicious link, or even just
by "going on the Net". Think I got that in an advert
type advisory from McAfee, so maybe take w/ grain of
salt.

Appreciate the *PingPlotter* lead. Currently more than
adequate for my simple needs. We'll see how she goes.

Read up on the history and all, too. Really sad about
J. M. Muuss. Remember having similar feelings about
Tim Paten. Seems to me the man deserved better. Think
he's back with Microsoft though. Life goes on.

Well, by now you'll probably have tested NTop-XTRA.
Might give it a shot myself, just for the heck of it;
tho' probably way over my head. Actually, I like DOS
and PingPlotter will do me just fine for now, thanks. It's
quite straightforward.

May leave another comment at your site soon.

Cheers, and thanks for all the advice and help.

My Pleasure, Ted. Testing left for tomorrow, today I spent offline much time.

So tell me about Thailand. Are you permanent there? Which part is Songkhla? I
spent 3 very fun weeks around Bangkok (2 trips) a few years ago.
