I hope I am allowed one elementary question from time to time. I
recently loaded Windows XP on my system after years of living in the
Windows 98SE world. In my previous world, I was informed that it was
not a good idea to leave items in the Temp folder. I was told that
immediately after startup I was to go to Start>Run>type in %temp%>click
OK. On the next page that appeared I was supposed to click Select All
under Edit and then Delete. That seemed to keep things fairly clean on
my old 98SE system.

Is it wise to remove items from this folder (i.e.,
C:\Docume~1\Barb~1\Locals~1\Temp) on WindowsXP?

Also, what are the other areas that should be cleaned up after a new
install (one that included installing Service Pack 2 and the many other
Windows XP updates)?

Is there a web page that covers this and other routine maintenance I
should do while using Windows XP? I have looked without success so far
for such a page.

I would appreciate any helpful ideas you might have for this new
Windows XP Pro user.

Thanks,
Barb

Back in the days of small hard drives people used to clean temp files out to
increase hard drive space, these days is isn't such a big issue with the
huge hard drives available. You can clean out the temp files in the folder
you mentioned as well as C:\Windows\Temp if you wish, or get a program that
will do it for you automatically like Windows Washer. If you do it manually,
I won't bother more than once a month.

Windows XP has some maintenance tools build-in. Open My Computer, right
click on a drive and select Properties.
On the first tab there is Disk Cleanup which among other things will cleanup
temp files.
On the second tab there are buttons for error checking and defragmentation.
Error checking runs Chkdsk {replacement of Win 9.x scan disk}. In Windows
Help and Support search for chkdsk for a tutor.

Here is the best free application that you will find for assisting you
applicable your question. It's called CCleaner at http://www.ccleaner.com/.
Just install it and run it prior to shutdown.... only takes a second or so.

True. Its recommeded to remove items there when whenever you remember to
do so. But, its NOT recommened to do
automatically on every boot.
