Anytime I inserted a floppy, or zip disc, or compact flash card through, for
instance, the USB ports, I immediately saw a window with many choices on it,
one being "did I want to view the contents of this" etc, etc. That window no
longer comes up and now I have to go to the 'My Computer' window and actually
click on the device in question. At that point I can do what I want, but the
original window that flashed up the second I plugged something in was sure
handy.

How do I turn that feature on, or did it go away with all of the upgrades?

I would try removing the USB devices, and restart.

Go to Start/Run, and type DEVMGMT.MSC , highlight the device, Action menu,
"Uninstall", then restart Windows, to find the device drivers again
automatically.

Not sure you understand the full problem. The action window does not show up
with ANY disc insertion, whether it be a floppy, zip, or the use of one of
the USB ports. It always displayed when inserting any of those drives. I
did try removing the usb devices with no different results. And I don't see
the connection when viewing the DEVMGMT display.

If devmgmt.msc fails to detect, it's something worse than a driver problem.
I would suspect you need a BIOS update.
