I recently installed Window XP Pro on my lapton. However,
my wife and I decided that we would rather have XP Home on
the laptop top and install the XP on the PC. As yet, we
have not activated the XP Pro on the laptop but when I
installed it, I apparently didnot save the old OS.
Therefore, I understand that I will have to uninstall XP
Pro and format the disk on the laptop. Then, I would like
to install XP home on the laptop and XP Pro on the PC.

I have a couple of questions. First, How do I go about
uninstalling XP Pro on the laptop? Secondly, since I didnot
save my old OS on the laptop, How do I go about formatting
the drive so that I can install XP Home on it? And
finally, since XP Pro has been on another computer, is
there anything special that I should be aware of when
installing it on the PC?
Thanks for the help.

Assuming you have the original Windows XP Home CD for the laptop just
boot the computer with that CD and choose the option to delete the
existing partition and create a new to install XP Home onto.

Note that everything repeat everything on the hard drive will be wiped
out beyond recovery by this procedure. Installed applications, user
data files, emails, address book - everything.

Assuming that your XP Pro is a retail upgrade version then once you
have wiped it out from the laptop you are free to install it onto
another computer. And as it had not been activated there are no other
complications or concerns relating to the previous install of this
copy on the laptop.

Good luck

I was hoping to see a reply here myself as I am having a
similar problem and I feel like banging my head against a
brick wall - with 6 inch nails! I have had my Toshiba
laptop for a month and in that short time I have come
across various problems - Fatal errors, cutting my
processor speed in half and partially uninstalling
programs and games itself. After contacting Pc World,
Toshiba and Microsoft I am still non the wiser. I have a
recovery disk from Toshiba that gives me the Windows Xp
Home and all my branded Toshiba stuff. I felt if I am to
know if I have a hardware malfunction I would need to
format and do a clean install with a full retail OS. I am
hoping to use the same as main pc - Xp Pro but I get to
last floppy boot disk and get STOP codes. Since then I
have been told that MS/DOS doesnt recognise NTFS so how
do I get into dos to format my drive?

Assuming that XP works well on both laptops, leave them as is. You
already have Windows XP on both computers. XP Pro contains a few features
aimed at users conmnected to large corporate networks and for high-end web
developers. There is no difference in the underlying Windows XP code. It is
byte-for-byte the same thing. There is no "advantage" to having XP Pro over
XP Home, and XP Pro is in no way superior, more powerful or better than XP
Home.
Assuming neither of you connect the PC to a server-based large corporate
network (your ISP doesn't count), and that neither of you need to test ASP
script in a local IIS environment (and if the terminology is unfamiliar, you
don't) and that neither of you are users of Visual Studio.Net to develop
ASP.Net web sites, then it doesn't matter which of XP Home or XP Pro is
installed. To repeat, they are the same operating system.

Since you will be formatting the laptop and doing a clean install of XP Home
on the laptop, there is nothing you have to do to uninstall the current copy
of Pro. The only thing you will need to consider is saving any data you may
have since you are re-formatting. When you are ready for the clean
install, simply boot from the XP Home cd and perform a clean install. There
are no considerations for putting Pro on the other machine since it was
never activated on the laptop.
