Hello MVP

I run a quality and fast computer with Windows XP Pro that work fast and
efficient but lately it developed a problem I have no solution for.
It is when I go to shut down the machine I get three notices. The first
says: <dwwin.exe DLL initialization failed> The second notice that ride
on top of the first says: <Instructions at 05ad71531 referenced memory at
0x00000014 could not be read>
And the third notice that ride on both two others says: < Windows can not
close this program>

I must close each notice separately for the computer to close.

I have all the protection in the world, I am sure it is not a virus, I do
not install any shareware ever. The only ones who install anything to this
machine are: A) Microsoft who load updates on my machine, B) Symantec who
update their program almost daily, and 3) Adobe PDF who keep loading updates
with activex, I try to stop them but can't, so I remove them later.

So where these three notice originate from ? I will be grateful for an
advice and help

Check your event viewer, right click my computer... manage... event
viewer. Check the system and application logs, and post the errors
here for more help.

Does this happen every shutdown, and does it happen if you shut down right
after logging in to an account, without running any other software other
than what is loaded at startup? What happens if you boot into safe mode and
log into that account then shutdown?

If it doesn't happen in safe mode then do some clean boot troubleshooting to
see what program is hanging up.

See

It might have something to do with your Adobe reader. I'd uninstall it
and see what happens.

Dear JBrunelle
I tried to make a jpg of the said pages. I know now that this program do not
accept attachements. So here is what I could copy from the "event
viewer'\application\system.

Hope it provide something to hold on to.
Thank you

Dear Rock
Yes it happen on each closing.
It happen at the end of any session.

I usually go the papers pages (NY Times, Washington Post, etc.) and I stay
there for a while. Then I do some of my own work and this is all I do with
this computer, and it happen at each closing of session be it long session
or a short one.
As far as running any other software then I only run what is on the computer
such as WORD, PAINT, PPS, and whatever else that comes with Windows and
office 2003.

I never went to safe mode and don't know how to get there or what to look
for when I am there.

I will go to the three links you gave me there. Hope I can swim there :-)
Will let you know what happened there

Many thanks

To boot into safe mode, restart the computer. As the BIOS splash screen
disappears repeatedly tap the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu
appears. One choice will be Safe Mode. Highlight that, press enter. The
loading of Windows will be different and the display will be different.
Login to the account with the problem, then restart the computer. Does the
problem occur?

That's just another test to see if it's something loading at startup in
normal mode to cause the problem. If it doesn't happen in safe mode then
it's something loading in normal mode. Boot back into normal mode and do
the clean boot troubleshooting. Basically it entails running Msconfig, then
disabling startup programs and testing to find out which one is causing the
problem. Once the culprit is identified you can decide on how to fix it.

1st error:

goto regedit, find this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
\AeDebug
Set the Auto value to 0 (should be set to 1)

Check this out for Event ID 4609

See if that helps

Dear Jbrunelle
I followed your route of going to the registry but didn't find what you said. I would have detailed what I found but it is no longer relevant as I have had a giant disaster thanks to Microsoft smart ass programs and my
stupidity to go for them.
Half of my computer was erased and with it several medical files with one year data I am not sure I can recover. Here is the story:

I took the advice to go to "safe mode" (Yours or Rock's I can't remember). Once there, I rebooted the machine and on shut down the old problems didn't show up. Now I had to go again to safe mode and try to locate the bad problems but I didn't know what I was looking for. To the rescue jumped Microsoft with the "system restore" program and it looked as a good idea. It became even very inviting when it gave me a windows that said that nothing will be lost from this action and "IT IS COMPLETELY REVERSIBLE"....
I took that offer and let "system restore" do it work. I even have a second HD an external one called "D" where I keep all my important things. To top it off "WINDOWS" tell me specifically that it can't touch HD "D" because it can't see it. Now I was primed for the Restore action and allowed WINDOWS do the job.

At the end I realized that besides the setting and few specialized icons that disappeared, and this is the least of it, also disappeared a Quick tax program I just recently bought and installed, those precious health files I
specifically kept separately and far away on "D" with a shortcut to them sitting on the screen, or C:\Desktop.

I took Microsoft on its word that says that it is all reversible and went back to "System restore" and asked it to restore it to any previous date before today but it went there and came up with the reply said that "it didn't do any change". (Read= Can't restore a thing.) B.U.T...

If you go to C:\Windows, you normally find at the top of the page few folders called: <$NtUninstall KBxxxxx>. I guess this is where Windows keep the folders it moves by the automatic "system restore". I was never sure what those folders are but now I know because Normally I find no more then 10 to 15 of them, but now within the hour they grew to be 117 such folders. Some of them empty and some pretty large. up to 250 MB and I suspect that all my data is there. I have opened few of them but they are all either .DLL or some other format that one like me has no access to them.

In short, after such a loss I might as well go for complete format once I am sure that my Data can't be retrieved, but I hope that someone can tell me how to "System restore" this machine back to before the restore I just did.

Thanks
Drora
