Recently I had problems with adware such that Windows XP
would no longer function correctly. In order to remedy
this problem, I had a local store fix the adware and
install internet security programs on the computer.
Since I received the computer back, the computer seems to
run okay, but the speed seems to be a bit slower. When
typing emails the computer is sluggish and it is having
difficulty with Windows Media Player. I am not sure why
a 2.4 GHZ computer would be running so slow. Any answers?

One more strange item. The computer is a 2.4 Ghz machine
but for some reason when I look at the setup it says 2.4
ghz running at 1.753. This always used to say 2.4 Ghz
running at 2.4.

If this PC is a laptop, then one real possible cause is
from over-heating. So even if your's is a desktop model,
still check for good air flow, fan function, and all
aroung good cooling. Also have at least 256 MB of RAM.

OK what type of 2.4Ghz chip? AMD will state 2.4GHz but Windows will report a slower speed. Check BIOS to see that FSB etc are correct for your CPU / MOBO combination.

Most stores spend very little time fixing up the system: they get it working again.

You may need to run a full virus scan, worm removal and ad-ware scan to be sure everything is 'clean'. After that run a Repair installation of XP.

When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below
This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft
Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.
Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.
Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.
Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.
Blaster worm warning: Do not immediately activate over the internet when asked, enable the XP firewall before connecting to the internet. You can activate after the firewall is enabled. Control Panel - Network Connections. Right click the connection you use, Properties, and there is a check box on the advanced page.
Reapply updates or service packs applied since initial Windows XP installation. Please note that a Repair Install from the Original install XP CD will remove SP1 and SP1 will need to be reapplied.

Thanks for the response. It is a Pentium 4 with 2.4
GHz. I had the store remove all of the adware, viruses,
etc. I have installed Norton Internet security and
Spysweeper. Still the computer runs slow. the computer
has 512K Ram I am not sure about the FSB.

Is the only way to fix this, to run the windows
installation disk? Can I fix portions or do I need to
start from scratch with the windows XP installation?

Thanks.
