Windows XP or "Longhorn"?

Hello,

I'm planning to build myself a new PC soon and wondered if I should upgrade now and use Windows XP
or wait until "Longhorn" is released? (which is about two years away).

At the moment I'm using Windows ME, and it's quite unstable. It, (or IE) keeps giving me "error messages"
and frequently hangs. So I thought "SOD IT, Get a new PC"!!

I guess I'm asking "Just how much better is Windows XP from Windows ME"?
What are the good and bad things about Windows XP?

Thanks for all advice.

The best advice I can give you is to upgrade.. Go for it.. Get Windows XP (I
suggest Professional, but you may not need the features.)

The thousands of systems I administer all have ran better, more stable, less
trouble than ever before. Some required hardware upgrades, but it was ALL
worth it in the end.

Windows XP is WAY better than ME. It's more stable: although programs can
still crash (this can be caused by a hardware fault, or a conflict between
the software installed or a lot of things that aren't directly part of the
OS) but generally a program crashing will not bring down or lock the whole
system like it often did in 9x/ME. A lot of the newer software is starting
to require at least Windows 2000 or XP as well.

I wouldn't wait for "Longhorn" = its going to be a while. You can always
upgrade Windows later if you want. (Of course, you could always upgrade
your current system to XP if the hardware is fairly recent. Maybe consider
upgrading the memory (RAM) though. And since you are having problems now I
would suggest blowing everything away and installing "from scratch" instead
of doing a simple upgrade because an upgrade may carry over all your current
problems. ... should you decide to upgrade to XP on your current hardware.)

Go ahead and build your machine. XP is such a step above ME you won't
believe it. I went to XP about 3 months after it was released. Since then, I
have never had a "crash" and never had a problem I could blame on XP. Make
sure the hardware you buy is XP compatible and you will have few, if any
problems. As with any new OS, there will be a bit of a learning curve but,
it won't take long to get it set up the way you want.

Hi,I was using ME with numerous problems, inability to shut down, crashes etc.I upgraded to XP and have not had a serious problem since.Do yourself a favour, you will not regret it. Brian

Paul, there is no question as to whether to go with XP over ME on a new
computer. XP represents a "brand new world" in terms of Microsoft operating
systems. There is a "not steep at all" learning curve, as there would be
with any new OS and will be with Longhorn, but if you are familiar with
Windows, the system is quite intuitive. Would you put a Ford Model T engine
in a new Jaguar?
