I recently shut down while the internet was connected.
Seeing this, I right-clicked on the icon and slid up to
disconnect -- while the shutdown was taking place.

Windows will not start now. I get the following
message: "Driver_unloaded_without_cancelling_pending_opera
tions with the technical info and the reference to
apfiltr.sys (I hunted around, the apfiltr.sys apparently
belongs to the touchpad).

When I try to start in safe mode, it also stops with this
message: Page_fault_in_nonpaged_area.

Once, it did open windows, and I immediately tried to
restore the system to an earlier date. In the restart, it
was stopped with the first message again.

I have not backed up recently, and would be loathe to lose
the electronic versions of the last few months of work (I
am a writer). Is there any way to resolve this conflict
without losing all of my hard drive?

Update and or reinstall the device driver which caused
that problem, which may be your touchpad or NIC ethernet
adapter driver. Test your RAM memory, as a faulty module
may cause this. Check these sites;

First try reboot into the advanced options menu, and
select the "last known good configuration"

You're right, this is from the touchpad: Alps Touch Pad
Driver for Windows 2000/XP. I would try to locate an
updated driver from the OEM of your computer or from ALSP
directly.

Hope this helps,
Derek
