Windows XP missing software

Can anyone suggest a line of action?

When I start windows XP and after I select the User, the
computer makes a warning sound and then hangs for approx
half a minute. It eventually brings up the desktop but
with a message that Windows cannot find a program called
monitor.exe

My question is - how can I find out what is calling this
program and how do I put it right (or remove it)
