hi ,
i have a problem with my pc which is running windows XP .a few days
ago it started behaving in an irrational manner.lots of run time
errors at first then missing files.now most icons when clicked no
longer work.for example musicmatch is dead it simple doesn't start
up.same with other programms.i tried using go-back but that too only
opens a blank page or at times nothing.i tried re-installing windows
and it can't see my dvd drive or the windows cd.i tried formating but
it's refusing to do so.clicking on format has no effect at all.i swept
it for viruses and spyware using ad-aware and spybot plus avg
viruschecker and an online sweep but they found nothing.i had to
install AVG antivirus as my previous one "avast" has also been
disabeled by whatever is happening.i am running windows XP and have
both service packs installed.my browser is firefox.can anyone please
point me in any more directions as to what might be wrong or how to
fix it?i have not installed any new programs recently so can't
understand what is going on.any help would be greatly appreciated
thank you :)

Hi

Could post the names of the files that have been missing? Your original
postings seems to incorporate several possible problems.

almost all the files seem to be missing DLL files and active X seems
to be missing them too.or rather anything requiring active X .is this
a virus or some other issue?

Hi

Try the following command from Start>Run - you may need to have your XP CD
to hand:

sfc /scannow

That command will check the Windows system files to make that they are all
in place and not corrupted. May I suggest that you let the app. run until
it is finished, as it is very CPU intensive.

i tried that and it wouldn't run giving me the following
message:windows cannot find sfc/scannow
