Ken

When booting my XP machine in Safemode only 15 executable
programs are running in task manager and the PC works
just fine. If I perform a normal boot up 46 executable
programs end up running, I think a couple of them come
and go and I think one of these programs is causing my
CPU to use 99 % of its resources and slow my PC to a
snail's pace.

Does XP have the ability to capture a history of the
executable programs that have run, so that I can print
out the history and begin to determine which executable
program is causing the problem?

You go to Start > Run > msconfig > Startup and selectively uncheck programs
in the list. Eventaully you will find the problem child.

Ken,

XP provides Task Manager, which shows you a snapshot of system activity, and not
a lot of detail in that about each task running.

Get Process Explorer (free) from
<http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml>. Provides way more
information than Task Manager, including a historical record of CPU and memory
utilisation by selected tasks.

Cheers,
Chuck
