I'm not sure what I did, but I no longer get the opening windows (click on
user name) screen. At bootup it goes start into my desktop. Any ideas how
to fix this? Thanks ...

Josh,

You need to disable auto-logon using any of these methods:

Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type control userpasswords2, and then click OK. In the dialog box that appears, enable "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" check box, and then click OK.

-or-

Click Start, Run and type rundll32 netplwiz.dll,ClearAutoLogon

And, set a password for your user account.

If you mean it boots directly to the desktop and you want the Welcome
Screen, open Control Panel, open User Accounts, click "Change the way users
log on or off," make sure Use the Welcome screen is selected and click apply
options. If it is already selected, deselect it, click apply options then
select it and do the same.

Go to Control Panel, click: User Accounts, then click: Change the way users
log on and off, then select: Use Welcome Screen, then click the Apply
Options button.

Tried that but no welcome screen just boots right into my desktop. Do I
need to create another account? There used to be an account called 'asp.
...." and i deleted it by accident ... ever since that I don't get the
welcome screen anymore.

OK, next step is Ramesh's response in this thread.

If you are using TweakUI for Windows XP, one of the FREE Microsoft Powertoys
for Windows XP, open it, and in the left pane click the + to the left of
Logon to expand the Logon options, then click on Autologon, and in the right
pane click to remove the checkmark in the box to the left of: Logon
Automatically at System Startup, then click the APPLY and OK buttons. If
you DO NOT have TweakUI for Windows XP, there are so many other reasons to
get it, to customize Windows XP to do what you want it to do, without having
to manually edit the Registry. You can download TweakUI for Windows XP at:

http://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWSXP/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

After downloading TweakUI.exe and saving it to a folder on your hard drive,
double click the downloaded file to install it.

To open TweakUI for Windows XP after it's installed: Click Start button/All
Programs/Accessories/Powertoys for Windows XP/TweakUI for Windows XP.

If you want to add a TweakUI icon to your Control Panel: Go to Kelly's
site:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Click on Item #1: Add XP TweakUI Icon to the Control Panel

Save the xp_AddTweakUItoControlPanel.vbs file to a folder on your hard
drive. Then double click that saved file.

Urgh ... Okay, I tried all of the advice here and still no go! Windows
still doesn't start in the welcome screen - straight into my desktop. Now
what?

Well I figured it out ... I uninstalled Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 and
then reinstalled it. Seems to work fine now.

Glad you got it worked out.

Thanks for letting us know, Josh.

I have the same problem with my start up screen also. How do you uninstall
..NET l.l from the Computer. I have tried everything that you have tried, but
do not know where to delete the .NET l.l

Remove your auto-logon settings.

1. Go to Start/Run and type in: control userpasswords2 and press ok.

2. On the Users tab, left click your user name then clear the Users Must
Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer check box and then click
OK.

Tip:

Add Control UserPasswords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)
