I purchased a used laptop that had an unregistered version
of Windows XP Pro. On the bottom of the computer is a
license for Windows XP Home edition. I would like to
install the Windows XP Home edition to be legal. I don't
have the copy of Windows XP Home that came with the
computer originally, but I do have a Windows XP Home
upgrade disk. When I tried to intall using the license
number, it would not work. How can I legally install
Windows XP Home edition?

There's a diffrence in "the license" and the registration
nos,the nos to register is called the product key, usually
found with the container to the cd.Get the product key
for the cd then try.

You must obtain a disk of the same type as came with the computer in the
first place. Not an Upgrade disk. Not a Retail disk. If your computer came
with XP loaded by the manufacturer, then at the very least, you would need
that kind of OEM disk (not an OEM disk that comes in its own package).
Getting a disk when you have a Product Key label is easier than getting a
label when you only have a disk. You will want to clone, not rip, the
borrowed disk in order to have a copy of XP at hand for emergencies.

Greetings --

You'll have to obtain the OEM installation CD from the laptop's
manufacturer, or buy a full retail version.
