I cannot seem to get into my personal settings in XP professional. It all
started a few days ago when I ran a search in the Help menu and the computer
froze up. I rebooted it. Ever since then I've been getting this endless
loop of restarting when I log in. I cannot get to any of my settings
directly. If I log in as a guest and then SWITCH users to my user, I get a
prompt warning me that others will be logged off if I shut the computer
down. I select "no" and the computer doesn't reboot and I can get into my
settings this way. So basically, the only way for me to get to my settings
is to go in indirectly as a guest. Is there a way around this? This is
crazy!

This looks familiar. On the 10th my computer decided to reboot itself everytime I turn it on. So XP starts nicely until the desktop and then automaticly shuts down and restarts, ... this is a kind of loop
So I go into safe mode, using the F8 and reset the computer to a previous date and then it starts normally. When I then restart the loop occurs again ..

anyone?

i've had this problem as well: XP starts nicely, and then automatically restarts in what seems an endless cycle. in the system tray i get a little icon that looks like the "install software" icon..

i had just installed the new iPod support, and thought this was related to it..

When I had XP rebooting on me over and over again, it turned out that I had a bad RAM chip. You can test your RAM with this program from Microsoft

http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.as

If you don't want to download it and you have two or more ram chips, take all but one out and see if it still happens. If it does, you may have a bad chip. Try it with each chip by its self. If XP stops rebooting with one of the chips, that is likely a good chip. The Memory Diagnostic is probably the best way to find out for sure though.
