Douglas

I've noticed recently that Windows XP is running very
slowly. Once my computer boots up, opening up
applications take a lot longer than they usually do. I'm
usually a new Dell Desktop (with 512 ram) I update my
Windows XP program all the time. I have also:
defragmented my hard drive, ran Norton 2004 virus scan,
removed all adware and spyware and basically everything
else I can think of to speed up the computer. I've done a
lot of searches on the Internet and it appears others are
having the same problem as well, but I can't seem to find
a solution that really works. Even loading Internet
Explorer sometimes takes several seconds to respond and I
have DSL. Any (and all) suggestions would be very much
appreciated!

Temporary internet files and such clutter up and slow
down everything. A few software applications I personally
use which give me GREAT speed increases are:
Windows washer (version 5 is the newest)

and iolo's system mechanic (version 4 newest)

i beleive the websites are webroot and iolo.com

HOPE THIS HELPS!

Douglas;
Do you remember if you changed anything about the time this started?

Try System Restore to a time befort this started:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore.

Update to the latest Windows XP drivers.

Check for missing/damaged system files:
Start/Run
Type "sfc /scannow" ENTER
Have Windoiws XP CD available.

Windows Update to latest updates.

Hey Doug
I was having the same problem with mine as alot of people
are I just copied and pasted what I found on a website
BECAUSE LOW AND BEHOLD IT ACTUALLY WORKED! Here is the
answer for all you impatient folks like me out there!

SYMPTOMS
When you drag the pointer to select multiple file icons,
the computer may slow down or become erratic.
CAUSE
This problem may occur if you have enabled the Show
translucent selection rectangle option. Alpha blending
causes a noticeable performance decrease on many
computers.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, disable the Show translucent
selection rectangle option:
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
On the Visual Effects tab, clear the Show translucent
selection rectangle option.
Click OK twice.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the
Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of
this article.
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Microsoft Windows Advanced Server, Limited Edition

Been there...
Open Windows Task Manager and look under processes and see
which culprit is using up the highest cpu%.
I traced mine to a recentlty downloaded file that created
the whole problem and 4 antivirus couldn't find it...
GOOD LUCK!!
