Windows XP Installing/Loading Incredibly Slow

Hi everyone,

I posted this in the general area but I noticed the help and support
and figured this would be a more suitable place for it obviously.

I have been having problem after problem and I would be very
appreciative to whomever can be of any assistance. This is a long
story but please bare with me.

First, here are my specs:
Asus A7N8X Deluxe PCB Rev. 2.0(Bios ver. 1007 updated before clearing
CMOS)
AMD 2500+xp overclocked to 3200+ (cooling is not a problem)
2 sticks of Corsair XMS 256mb PC3200 (set in dual channel mode)
Western Digital 80gb 7200RPM SATA drive
IBM 80gb 7200RPM drive (IDE)

Just recently I got a WD 80gb 7200rpm SATA hard drive and decided to
install XP on there. It went through without a hitch and it was fast
and easy. Then a few weeks later I got a virus (forgot to install the
antivirus software) so I just decided to reformat and do a fresh
install of XP again. To do this I needed to connect a floppy drive to
my computer (I don't normally have one installed) so I could install
the SATA drivers. What ensued was a plethora of problems.

One of the power pins on the floppy drive snapped off and was lodged
into the power plug of the PSU. Power continued to flow into that
plug I presume and smoke started to appear so I quickly turned the
computer off. Of course smoke is never good and I think it even fried
my DVD drive as it won't power on anymore, but the PSU works fine with
the exception of a disabled floppy drive power connector.

So I grabbed another floppy drive and continued my reinstallation only
to find that my computer would not post. Confused I started to clear
the CMOS by both removing the battery and changing the jumpers. After
that didn't solve the problem, I noticed that everything seemed to be
powering up okay so I just reseated the videocard and to my
embarassment, this solved the posting problem.

So when I installed XP it was installing incredibly slow. It would
take at least 3 hrs to install and when it was finish, windows would
load up incredibly slow as well. Everything I did was slow. My hard
drive activity was sparse and seemed to respond only when it wanted
to. I've tried reformatting and reinstalling windows 2 more times
with the same exact result.

This is killing me, I don't know what the problem is. If anyone can
help, please do so! I would be infinitely thankful!

Go to Start, Run and type in msconfig. Look in the startup section and
uncheck everything that you don't really need to start up when Windows
boots. You can also uncheck them one by one and maybe get lucky and find the
program that is slowing down you boot-up process. I had a similar problem
and it turned out to be Norton Anti-Virus that took 3 minutes to load. I
uninstalled it and removed all the registry entries and downloaded AVG Free
Edition and all is well. Good luck.

Well the thing is, it's a complete fresh install. The only thing
that's running is windows. The very first time I installed windows on
it, before I got the virus, it loaded up quick and without a fuss. So
that's what confuses me. I'm guessing it could be faulty ram now, but
I'm still not sure.

Make sure you have installed the latest .inf for the motherboard and check
and see if your hd/hds are running in UDMA 4/5.
