On installing to a new computer it keeps telling me it cannot copy various
files, asks me to press enter to continue which sometimes does then install
the file but not with others so the install is failing. Any ideas folks?!?!!
Thanks in advance

Installing *what* to a 'new' computer?
Are you attempting to install the Operating System? If so - what operating
system (Windows XP has many versions)?

It could be (if you are installing the OS):
- Bad CD
- Bad CD drive
- Bad cable from CD to motherboard
- Bad motherboard
- Bad memory
- Bad hard disk drive
- Bad power supply

How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

I'm attempting to install xp Home Edition. It formatted the HDD fine and then the error messages started when it said it was copying files. It did say that there may be a problem with the CD when it stated that it could not copy some of the files but not every one, but I didn't know if this was a standard warning.
How can I check the source of the error?

Sound to me like one of these: a bad CD (scratched/dirty), bad CD drive
(laser misaligned, bad cabling) or possibly bad memory or hard disk drive.
The easiest thing to check is the CD - clean it with a soft, non-abrasive
cloth and check for scratches. Next - using a CD drive cleaning kit - you
might clean the drive itself. After that - you might try using an
alternative CD drive (replace it with a new one/borrow one from a different
system.) Beyond that, you would need to get the hard disk drive diagnostics
from the hard disk drive manufactuyrer's web page and run it on the hard
disk drive to test for issues (possibly do a full zero-fill write to it) and
popssible some sort of memory testing application to run on your memory for
a few hours.

Thanks Shenan

After having to reinstall many times, The CD is scratched

No hope of help from Microsoft

They have our money

Now they do not care

To Hell with the customer

That's only true if the disc is an OEM disc. If it's a full-retail
disc, you can get a replacement from MS.

Confucious say: Customer who do not make disc backup is dumb customer"

I say: anyone who has to reinstall the OS that many times is a dumb
computer operator.

Dude, you can't be serious. *You're* the one who scratched up the disk and
who failed to make a copy of it. for safekeeping. How in heaven's name is
that anyone's responsibility but your own? I imagine you can't have been
storing this CD safely in a jewel case, either, because I've used most of my
CDs many times and they don't get scratched from regular, careful use.

For now you can just go find an XP CD on eBay - make sure it matches the
type of key you've got. In that a retail CD needs a retail key - an OEM CD
needs an OEM key - etc.

"Installing" does not scratch a disc.
"Driving" does not scratch a car

Scratches won't get you a new one of either

Still insulting posters?

Not knowing 'that one' I cannot make a statement like that. Suppose for
example he/she is brand new to computers.

Why didn't you bring that up when "Lanwench [MVP]" posted:

And I'm just sayin': 7 useless rude crude & demeaning post in a row from
the "best of this group". And not a single OT or no-archive amongst
them so the whole world will be able to view their crassness for
generations to come. 7 times people with nothing to say still said
something, dumb & egotistically anxious to see their tripe in print
rather than say what they had to say; which was nothing and exactly what
they should have said: Nothing. 7 Nothings. What wastes of brainless
shrouds of skin. The "me too" crapola is alive and very well on this
site. 7 "its" who shouldn't even be breating the same air as thinking
individuals. All 7 together couldn't comprise one whole brain's worth
of cells or intelligence.

Now watch the host of silly responses to this post and how ignorant
they'll all sound. Some people have bad days but these people never had
a good day and I hope they never do. All in need of that "male
enhancement" spam going around right now; none with anything to show and
not a grower in the bunch.

Stand by; it's about to rain.

Hi, Twayne!

My post was intended to tell the OP that he needed a serious adjustment of
expectations. I also told him he could get another copy on ebay. I posted 26
minutes after the first reply, which had not shown up in my newsreader when
I replied ....or frankly, I wouldn't have bothered. However, that first
reply also told the OP where he could get a replacement disc. Funny thing
is, I'm looking for your reply to the OP in which you answered his question,
but am having trouble finding it. Perhaps you forgot to hit send.

I'm not interested in pursuing this thread, as I actually have other hobbies
in the real world, but you kids go on and enjoy yourselves.

You just joined the group of 7.
