Hi, I'm having some major problems getting Windows XP to install. I'm
hoping someone here can help me. Anyway, my problem is this: I'm upgrading
from Windows 98SE to Windows XP Home Edition with the upgrade version.
However, every time the "preparation install" finishes and the installer is
about to move to the next section I get a fatal error that goes something
like this:

[begin]

Error:
SXS.DLL: Syntax error in manifest or policy file
"C:\$WIN_NT$.~LS.I386\asms\70100\MSFT\WINDOWS\MSFT\MSWINCRT\MSWINCRT.MAN" on
line 5.
***
Error:
Installation Failed: C:\$WIN_NT$.~LS.I386\asms. Error Message: A component's
file does not match the verification information present in the component
manifest.
***
Fatal Error:
One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be
installed.
A component's file does not match the verification information present in
the component manifest.

[end]

All in all, I've tried installing Windows 4-5 times. Each time I do the
first error message is slightly different where the path is concerned. But
otherwise I get the same basic error.

Also, I know for *certain* that the problem is not the CD itself. The first
CD I used was a completely legit copy I bought from a major electronics
chain store. After my installation failing several times I figured that the
CD was probably faulty so I returned the software for a new copy. Today
when I tried the new CD it still would give me the same error. So the
problem is obviously not with the CD.
