Windows XP install stops working

My hard drive died so I had to get a new one. I have
Windows XP Home and began to install Windows XP. Setup
started copying the files and at about 22%, I started
getting error messages saying that the files being copied
aren't windows images and if I'm installing from CD,
there may be a problem with my CD. I am installing from
the CD, but can't figure out how something can suddenly
be wrong with it. It gives me the option of skipping
files, but from then on, each time I skip a file, the
next one brings up the same error. I gave up after
trying to install it three times.

I'm at a loss as to what to do now. I tried to get
online help from Microsoft since the telephone support
isn't open at this hour, but it won't let me proceed
without my Product ID number. Since I can't install the
product, I have no way that I know of to access the
product ID number. It won't accept the product key on
the back of the disk package.

If anyone can help, I'd sure appreciate it.

Thanks.

Hi,

Read your problem like dejavu`. Had the exact same
problem this weekend. My conclusion... It's your new
drive. Just my best guess.

My original was a Seagate 30GB. It crashed and I was
replacing it with a Maxtor Ultra ATA/133 30GB. The BIOS
had no problem with it. Used the manufacturer utilities
to partition and prepare the drive no problem. Got to
Windows setup copy files and died just like yours. Tried
installing Windows 2000 Pro (my original) and it just
gave me a blue screen of death.

Took the Maxtor back this AM and replaced with a Seagate
40GB ST340015A. Problem resolved....

IF you didn't, try to match your replacement to your
original (or similar.) Also, avoid the ATA/133 and stick
with the ATA/100's. I even chose a 5400 rpm model over a
7200 rpm model.

Hope this helps...
