Hello,

I purchased the upgrade version of Windows XP Home over a
year ago.

And for a variety of reasons I've reinstalled ( upgraded
Windows 98 ) numerous times.

Same computer each time ( my HP desktop ).

My latest attempt to reinstall Windows XP ( to get a fresh
start ) has resulted in failure.

A family friend told me about a limit with respect to the
number of times that one is allowed to install/reinstall
Windows XP.

A limit that applies even with respect to a single
computer and single user.

Is it necessary that I purchase a second copy of Windows
XP?

Or was I not given accurate information?

Thank you in advance for any/all help.

No, you don't need to purchase another copy of XP. I have one copy of XP
that I have moved into its third computer.(Only one at a time, though.)
I have had to do a repair install once and had to call Microsoft to activate
it, as it would not activate over the internet.
It only took a couple of minutes and was not a problem.
The people that are complaining about activating must be trying to load one
copy on more than one machine.
Its 1 machine per license.

No. I don't know what trouble you are in, but that is not it and your
friend is wrong. You can reinstall to the same hardware as many times
as you like. See more at www.aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm

What was the nature of the failure?

I've got the same problem with windows xp home, I bought it a while back (cant remember exactly when, at least a year ago) and I hit the install limit! I've only used it on my own computer, and I normally experiment with linux and other operating systems so I re-install xp, a LOT. If I call microsoft will they "reset" my copy?
