Windows XP in constant loop

Win XP SP2 boot until the log-on screen (two user) and whenever I chose one
of the users icons, it briefly starts logging on, only to log off immediately
there after with no chance to intervene. I'm then back to the log-on screen
and it goes on without evr being able to enter windows. Installed Symantec
Antivirus 2004 a few weeks ago which caused some problems but not sure if it
is related. Pls help.
