Windows XP Home with SP2 will not start HELP

Can anyone help as I said above XP Home when starting goes as far as the
first windows screen then back to the begining (DOS Start Bios check etc
screen).
Did a format and reinstall and after updating Office 2003 SP1 it all went
wrong.
Microsofts FAQ just has me going around in cercles.

It depends on what "it all went wrong" means.
