Windows XP-Home Repair???

I have tried to get this problem resolved, but so far, I've not had any luck
at all.

Scenario/Problem:

My Win-XP had been running fine w/ no problems. Up to the day when my
problem arose, I had not installed any new hardware or software, nor removed
any.

Problem: On starting my computer an error message stated: "file is missing
or corrupt: system32\drivers\pci.sys

The message says: "you can attempt to fix it" by using the Windows XP
start-up disk & pressing "r" when you get to the first screen". When trying
to do so, I end up with a dos prompt on a screen, which is apparently the
"help/recovery console" screen. There are commands that one can enter there,
ie, fixboot, chdsk, etc., but I'm not sure if I'm suppose to enter commands
or not. This means of "fixing the problem" has not fixed my problem.

I have also gone down a path for a "repair installation", but this does not
seem to solve my problem. I get a message that says If I format the
partition that's available, I will lose all files on that partition.

Incidentally, I've also removed all PCI devices and my memory chips, one at
at time, of course (256k each) , and re-booted my computer. Unfortunately,
the same error message arises.

If there are any volunteer-techs that have the time/and or knowledge to
assist me, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

sounds like you didn't get to the "repair install" portion...

repair console was the prompt you got ...not there :>

take normals steps as if you were going to install XP , at some point it
will give you the option to "repair" your existing install...note ,you will
need to reinstall all updates since your first install..
