I have a laptop and a desktop both running xp home. I am trying to share a
printer on the desktop. The desktop can see the laptop but the laptop will
not see the desktop. I can ping in both directions. I can use the run \\ip
and see the laptop from itself but cannot see the desktop The desktop gives a
network path can not be found error when I try \\ip. I have disabled all
firewalls on both pc's. The windows firewall service will not start on the
desktop if this means anything. Help please!!

What firewalls did you disable? Note that disabling third party personal
firewalls is not always a useful process.

I would suspect LSP / Winsock corruption, if not a personal firewall issue.

I would look at Event Viewer, though, and see why the firewall service doesn't
start.

Try to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP. To do this, go to the properties of TCP/IP>Advanced>WINS.
