there seems to be a problem with my XP dlls and codecs are missing. when i
reinstall windows and do all 70+ updates (WinXPsp2) plus install all of my
apps and games I can see that come codec files are missing but registered and
windows explorer crashes all the time because some of its assets are missing.
my question is... what can i do about it? i reinstalled the codecs every day
and that seems to be working as a short term solution but how can i repair
windows explorer without reinstalling every day?

system specs? home or pro?
Have you run chkdsk to check the hard drive for errors? Perhaps these files
are being written to a bad spot on the hard drive.

First of all, I will suggest you to resolve the problem instead of
reinstalling Windows everyday? You should post the exact error message, so we
can come with a right solution.

However, for the time, I will advise you:

1. Let us know, that in everyday reinstallation, are you doing a Fresh
Installation of Windows or just Repairing the old one.
2. While reinstalling Windows, make sure that no file is being skipped
because of a Bad Media. Notify us, if any errors comes up at the time
reinstallation.
2. After a fresh reinstall, first thing first is make a Restoration Point
using System Restore from System Tools. So, later if an error comes up then
you don't have to reinstall Windows.
3. Turn Off Automatic Updates for the time.
4. Install all the appropriate drivers. Pay attention on every step and
write down if an error message comes up. Make another Restoration point.
5. Install all necessary and Essential Applications first and make another
Restoration Point.
6. When you are done, Turn On the Automatic Updates. See if any update is
causing the problem.

In last, I will say that you have to pay attention on every step and every
installation so you can note down what is causing the problem.

Hope you come up with a right solution or atleast right poblem. Let us know!

Download a drive diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer's web site.
That will create a bootable floppy or CD. Boot from that and run the
diagnostics.

Download and run at least two of the memory diagnostic utilities. Again
they will create a bootable floppy or CD. Let the diagnostics run for a
long time, not just a single pass for each one.

before i begin thanks for the advice however you were all on the wrong track...
i have rolled back to windows media player 9 and avi's now play. my indows
explorer was not able to get through zone alarm to access files it wanted on
the net for media player 11. here is a simple way to tell what your computer
is trying to do or at least when it is trying to do something... change the
sound for starting an app to a sound you can easily recognize (mine now
says:"accessing data please wait") then open an avi file with media player...
you will notice that upwards of ten programs are accessed
"...acc..acc...acc..accessing..." as my computer would say. those other
programs didn't have permission to access the web. there was no error
messages which is what really had me going (even i can trace an error code)
as for the dlls i can't say 100% but they may be incorporated or bundled dlls
(more than one dll grouped together because they form simular tasks into one
dll file) since removing wmp11 my computer has stabalized and i haven't had
to reinstall since.
this reminds me of the time avg was infected on my computer by a virus and
20,000 files were infected on the first scan (feb.05.06)
by the way this is winxp home 1gig ram and wd 80gb. no bad sectors no bad
memory etc.. i should have said that was previously attempted
thx again.
