I have a 2 year old computer with an athlon 1600+ on a ECS
MB. Have been running XP home for 18 months.

I was adding a USB 2.0 board made for a Soyo MB.Windows
XP asked for a Service Pack 1 update which I began
downloading. During download my wife logged into her
profile on the computer and after several hours I
discovered her intrusion. I tried to log off her profile
but the computer would not log off. I finally had to do a
reset. Now the computer hangs on Boot (black screen, no
disk activity after 30 minutes wait).

I removed the USB 2.0 card. I attempted every other
option including last known profile, safe mode, ect all
hang up to black screen. I even tried to reload XP by
loading Windows 98 SE and then trying to do both and
upgrade and a full install, Window 98 runs fine but
reinstall of XP hangs up(will not install). I really
don't want to reformat because I don't think I have all my
files backed up. I could use windows 98 to back up but
would rather not.

Any other suggestions?
