I'm a home working writer, and do everything from my home. I just purchased
Windows XP Professional with a new powerful computer at BestBuy. When I
receieved the computer it had Windows XP Home Edition. BestBuy automatically
installs at the Hewlett Packards plant, and to get Professional, I'd have to
send my system back and we're talking more down time. Point: BestBuy's
"Geek Squad," who will install everything for me, says the only difference
between XP Pro and XP Home is security measure or features, particularly,
security features that a business might use to protect and maintain its
networking, and that I will find every feature that Pro has in Home, other
than security features. Is this true?

If you are not on a corp. network connected to a Domain or AD forest, you don't need WinXP
Pro.

It's not the only difference, but it's largely true. XP
Professional and XP Home are exactly the same in all respects,
except that Professional has a few features (mostly related to
networking and security) missing from Home. For most (but not
all) home users, these features aren't needed, would never be
used, and buying Professional instead of Home is a waste of
money.

Also note that Professional allows ten concurrent network
connections, and Home only five.

Wow! A Best Buy where the personnel actually know something about
the product they sell? I've never heard of such a thing.

The two versions are _identical_ when it comes to performance,
stability, and device driver and software application compatibility,
but are intended to meet different functionality, networking,
security, and ease-of-use needs, in different environments. The most
significant differences are that WinXP Pro allows up to 10
simultaneous inbound network connections while WinXP Home only allows
only 5, WinXP Pro is designed to join a Microsoft domain while WinXP
Home cannot, and only WinXP Pro supports file encryption and IIS.
(Oh, and WinXP Pro usually costs roughly $100 USD more than WinXP
Home.)

a preinstalled OEM from _BestBuy_, your troubles are just beginning.

To the OP, XP Home will work just fine, but you'll probably
need to go back and buy a word processor with all the bells
and whistles you want, such as a dictionary and thesaurus,
WINDOWS (any version) does not come with such applications.
Windows XP does have WordPad and Notepad but they lack the
word count, spell checkers, and other features you may need.
The least expensive way to get MS WORD is to buy the MS
WORKS SUITE (about $70-100).
