Lately, when I try to run Error Checking, after I reboot,
I receive the following message: "Cannot open volume for
direct access". Obviously, it stops there and the five
steps are not performed. Your advice, please.

Do you have ZoneAlarm installed and did you recently upgrade it to
version 5.0? It has been reported that ZoneAlarm 5.0 may be the root cause
of your problem.

Go to Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter. Then type in:
chkntfs /x c: , and hit enter. Reboot your computer.

This is to thank Carey Frisch and Rocky for their prompt
replies to my original message. Yes, Zone Alarm Pro Ver.5
is the problem. Prior to my message I had clicked
on "Shutdown ZoneAlarm Pro". That didn't help. After
Carey's mention of ZAP, I decided to completely uninstall
ZAP. That did the trick. After rebooting, Error-Checking
did its job. Now, I'm trying to let ZAP know about this
problem, but their support scheme is so complicated I'm
not able to handle it so far. Possibly, Carey might be
able to get through to them. Now that I've run the Error-
Checking, I have reinstalled ZAP.

Thanks again, Hugh Maxwell
