Once again I am having a problem with my Windows XP home edition operating
system.
I will explain my problem. For some unknown reason, every I log on my
account AIM loads up. My children use AIM, but I do not. I know it is not in
my start up. So I then try to run msconfig in the run command. What happens
is when you click ok or hit the enter key nothing will happen. Meaning the
window for msconfig will not appear. I will try doing this a number of times
and finally it might appear on the screen, but before I can move my mouse to
click on the start up tag I lose the msconfig. That is the problem I can not
bring up msconfig. Of course I have found other problems while trying to
troubleshoot.
The next problem I encountered was I cannot do a system restore. I can open
the application ok but I cannot go back to a previous month. I click on the
arrow part that says previous month and nothing will happen. I have tried
restating my computer both warm and cold boot. Still the same. I have tried
logging on with different users. It does the same thing. Then I tried doing
an ALt,Ctrl,Delete to see if I can bring up the programs that are currently
running. It reacts the same way that msconfig works. Maybe if you try to keep
hitting A,C,D it might come up for a brief second and then disappear. My
suspicion is something got corrupted on My Windows XP again.
This is where I need your help. I thought Windows XP was supposed to be
better than Windows 98 or Windows Me. I'm starting to have my doubts. And yes
I do routine maint. like disk clean up and defrag. I use Norton anti virus
software also to monitor my a-mails. I know I don't have a virus.

I will tell all that I am unhappy now with Microsoft support. After having installed the full version of Windows XP home on my computer in less than six monthes. I have written to them for support with differant problems. They did not charge me a fee. Now they tell me that I have to pay a fee because I have used up my free support questions. They did not tell me in the begining that I could only have a limited number of support questions for free. It's the latest operating system. The support should be free, if e-mailing them. A phone call I understand. Microsoft makes plenty of money. Ask Bill Gates.

Is there anyone out there who can help me or point me to the right support that is not going to cost me any money? I have little money to spend. I need help.
Thank you.

Paul K.

Can you please help me with this problem? Thank you
Sincerely
Paul Kelley

Gidday Paul, I've seen a few different viruses that will affect msconfig
in this way, especially just recently. Are you operating and maintaining an
anti virus program? In my experience, children + computers = viruses. End of
story. Even when they swear black and blue they didn't go near that porn
site thats in your history file at a time when they were the only ones home!
Run your anti virus for a start, if possible in safe mode, then let us know
how it goes... Cheers
