Windows XP Home Bootup Question

Information

On our Compaq (PC at office, sorry for no other details) we have reformatted
the hard rive and are attempting a clean install of XP Home. We were able
to boot using the CD, reformat the drive (used NTFS, not quick) and go
through the first portion of the install.

After reboot, system shows XP logo, brings up the progress bars under the
logo, then everything stops one bar before it reaches the end on the first
pass. We hae swapped memory, removed the video card to use the on-board
video, disconnected everything except one CD and the boot drive, and still
the bars stop at the same point. Since we could accomplish the first
portion of the install, I am stumped at whether power supply or motherboard
is the possible culprit.

I apologize for not having the specific model, hopefully the info provided
can get me started. Can have better info tomorrow.

Any help appreciated,

Dan

Hi,

Could be either, but I'd suspect the motherboard. Make sure to use defaults,
not custom settings in the system BIOS, and it may help to clear the CMOS.

Have moved the power supply to another system, and it seems to work well.
Removed the CMOS battery as well. Moved the PS back, and rebooted. Same
issue.

Looks to be the motherboard.

Seems odd that I can format the hard drive and get through the first copy,
then the reboot is where it locks. I have not had a system do that before.

System is a Presario 6016US, AMD Athlon 1800 CPU.

Thanks for the input,

Dan
