OK, So I've installed Windows XP Home edition. It works ok, except for
sometimes I tend to upgrade hardware or HAVE to reformat due to problems
beyond the repair capabilities of Windows.

So what's the problem? It's that damn activation process! Sometimes it lets
me activate over the internet, sometimes I have to call the 800 number,
enter ALL the secret code and then get transferred to a live person only to
have to give them ALL that information AGAIN!

Isn't there some way to by pass this whole process? Say maybe a one time
activation fee for unlimited use? I'd be willing to pay that to avoid the
pain in the a$$ process of calling every other month just to give a laundry
list of information repeatedly. After all, I paid for the copy of Windows XP
Home, why should I have to confirm it every time I have the unfortunate
pleasure of re-installing it?

James;
If you do not change to much within 120 days, internet activation
works.
See this link for activation details and what causes the need to
reactivate:
http://aumha.org/win5/a/wpa.htm

You are most likely to small for Volume License so activation will be
necessary as long as you constantly change hardware.

However if you need to activate so often, I wonder if you could save
some time by not activating until necessary.
You have 30 days after initial installation...use the time.

Thanks Jupiter. I have been doing the time stretch thing. But today I tried
to log on and it signed on and then off. Which looks like it needs to be
activated. So how do I activate it now without having to reinstall? Safe
mode? Thank goodness for laptops :)

Greetings --

If you're encountering so many problems that you have to
re-install the OS more often than every couple of _years_ (let alone
the 120 day period affecting activation), you might want to look into
eliminating the specific causes of the problems, whether it's
defective hardware or the practice of unsafe hex.

Wish I could tell you what the problem was Bruce. Maybe I might share in
some of B.G.'s wealth. I do know this, it's not hardware related.
