Hello. I got tired of the software conflicts on my computer and wanted to
reinstall the operating system and start over. So, I ran a New Installation
from my Windows XP Home Edition CD. Now, I have two copies of the OS
running on my computer. How do I correct this problem?

Thank you in advance for all of your help.

Jennifer

Hi, Jennifer.

Two easy steps, once you are sure which copy is which:

1. Remove the second copy from C:\boot.ini. Type at the Run prompt:
c:\boot.ini. This will open boot.ini in Notepad. Delete the wrong entry
under [operating systems]. Save and Exit Notepad.

2. Remove the second "boot folder" to recover its disk space. If you have
only a single volume (Drive C:), the first one is, by default, C:\Windows.
The second one might be D:\Windows, or C:\Windows2, or some other such name.
WinXP won't let you delete the one it is using, but if you are booted into
the copy that you want to keep, it will remove the folder (with all its
files and subfolders) for the other copy of WinXP.

If you want to reinstall WinXP in the future, please read Microsoft's
instructions for an "in-place upgrade":
