Can anyone help please - Windows XP home edition - the
machine keeps freezing on me and I've uploaded all the
service packs to date. It's now very annoying and
sometimes can freeze up to 5 times a day. I can't open or
close anything when this happens and the machine just
hangs and I have to re-boot.

Many Thanks

Unfortunately freezing has many causes. It could be that your system is
overheating, a flaky power supply, a conflict of
Programs. I would go here and download Motherboard Monitor. It will give
you a good indication of where your system
is as far as temps and voltages. If your temps are exceeding 70 degrees C
that's very hot. If it's between 40 and 55 you
are Ok. Your voltages 3.3v, 5v and 12v should not dip below 3v, 4.5v and
11v. Good Luck

Sounds like you need to run CHKDSK.
Go to START, RUN, and type CMD. Hit Enter.
Then in the command window, type "cd\", without the
quotes. Hit Enter.
Type "CHKDSK /R". Hit Enter. It will complain that the
volume is in use. Hit "y" to run it the next time you
reboot.
Then reboot.

If it continues to freeze, you might have a hardware
problem like overheating or bad RAM.
With bad RAM, your computer works fine until you use the
bad memory address.

There's also the usual response of maybe a virus or maybe
run Spybot from http://security.kolla.de to see if
someone's marketing engine updater is causing it.
