Windows XP file selection defaults to renaming (unwanted)

On a clean install of Win XP pro, after umteen hotfixes and SP2, icon and
file selection defaults to a renaming mode which is a PITA. Has anyone
encountered and/or have a fix for this quirk. Or do I need to format and
start over?

This problem was caused by a non-WinXP approved scanner driver, and once
uninstalled, the problem disappeared. But you were close w/ your Left-click
(Double-click?) causing right-click "behavior"?
