Windows XP fails to start up

Hi,

My mother has a pc that we've bought in Aldi (belgium) with a Windows
XP Home edition pre-installed. The computer worked fine, until last
thuesday. All of a sudden, the computer fails to startup. When turning
on the computer, the monitor says "Intel inside", which is what we
always get to see when starting up the computer. But this screen should
stay only a few seconds and change into the Windows Xp startup screen.
But this doesn't happen.

We tried entering the bios setup by pressing the delete button
(documentation of the computer says this is the one to enter the bios
setup), but nothing happens... Probably, the computer is to screwed up
to do that as well. If I remember correctly, you have to press this key
when the Windows Startup screen is visible, and since we don't get
there, it seems logical that the computer crashes before we can try
this.

We tried booting from the Windows Xp cd, but then as well, the "Intel
inside" screen stays and nothing happens.

We have no clue what might be the problem: hardware or software. If
hardware, it would have to be a very necessary component for Windows to
be able to startup, that isn't working any more. So then I would say
(1) motherboard and processor
(2) videocard
(3) memory
(4) hard disk.
I suppose that booting from the cd-rom should work if the hard disk
were the problem. So I don't think it is the hard disk.
As the monitor shows "Intel inside", I suppose that the motherboard,
processor and videocard are still working fine as well. The monitor
cannot know what processor the computer has, unless the motherboard and
processor are still working to tell this information. And if the
videocard wasn't working any more, how could this info be shown on the
screen?
So this brings me at the computer memory... But that's pure guessing.

Could this perhaps be a software problem? Since I'm not able to boot
from CD and to enter the bios setp, I don't think so, but I'm not sure.
I posted my problem in a hardware related group and there someone
suggested that it probably a software problem. But how to fix this
then?

Maybe someone has an idea of what we can try to do to figure out the
problem?

This is almost certainly a hardware problem. Take the machine to a repair
shop, not the one at the Belgian National Electronics Chain Store (or
whatever the chain may be called).

Hi,

Failed component, could be:

- motherboard
- ram
- processor
- power supply (odd voltage)

As the system seems to power on, but not get to the initial setup screen, I
would suspect perhaps the BIOS cmos chip has failed. However, there is still
a strong possibility that this could be the ram.

I also live in Belgium and my friend has a laptop from Aldi , he had a
problem with his laptop too. He just returned his laptop to Aldi he got
a new one from them because the laptop was still guaranteed. =) The
problems did not occur again. If your pc is not guaranteed anymore ,
Aldi should be able to repair it , so bringing back your computer to
Aldi can be an option. Just explain the situation to them.

I think entering BIOS should work , I'm not sure. Press the delete
button like 1 time per second (or 2) right after you pressed the power
button to be sure that you triggered the action.
You can also try to start Windows in safe mode by pressing the "F8"
button 1 time per second right after you pressed the power button and
then select "Safe mode" with the arrow keys and press enter.

I hope this helped a bit ,

There was a 3 year guarantee that has expired about 3 months ago. I
don't know if Aldi is willing to repair computers that are no longer
guaranteed. And even if they do, I'm not sure we will try this because
maybe the repairs will so expensive that it is better to just buy a new
one.

We'll try this tonight after we get home from work. Thanks for trying
to help.
