Windows XP Explorer Crashes itself -- and other programs -- without warning

Every time I try to open a file (in certain directories) with Windows
Explorer -- or with any program that uses Explorer -- it crashes.

Just *poof* -- gone, without warning. Sometimes it gives me the old "We're
sorry for the inconvenience" deal, and other times it just goes away.

This happens using Explorer, FrontPage, Wordpad, Adobe Photoshop -- and
apparently any program that calls up Explorer to open a file.

I've reinstalled the "guilty" programs -- to no avail. Yesterday I
reinstalled/upgraded from XP Home to XP Professional -- with no change.

Any ideas here? I'm unable to update our webpage, since every time I try to
add a hyperlink, FrontPage calls up Explorer and crashes...

Thanks!

Ideas: 1) what does a scan with your current antivirus (using updated
definitions) show? and 2) do a RAM diagnostic - I like Memtest86. Other
than that, since you don't give enough detailed information, no more
ideas except Yellow Pages>Computer Repair. Or post back with system
information, what changed between the time things worked and the time
things didn't, any other information that might help total strangers
who are unable to see your system figure out what to try.

Cheers,

Malke
