Windows XP does not start

Windows XP could not start because the following file is
missing or corrupt.
Windows root\system32\hal.dll.
Tried re-installing windows XP and after setup restarts
get the same message. File is missing or corrupt.
Windows root\system32\hal.dll. Need help. Thanks
 
If you find the help you need please send it my way. My
was doing the same exact thing. I tried doing the F10
thing to go to the alleged internal recovery but that
didn't work either. I tried also to just reformat the
drive and now it say that autofmt.exe doesn't exist and it
won't allow me to format the drive. If anyone has any
suggestions I am all ears. I did manage to get it to try
and start loading Windows XP, then it just sits there and
does nothing, I can't even get the mouse to work. Lucklily
I have Win98 on my slave that allows me to access the
internet to try and find some answers.

You'll probably need to expand the file from the CD.
Type this command:
expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ (substitute "d" for the letter of your CD drive)
c:\windows\system32\hal.dll.
Substitute d: for the drive letter of your CD.
Once the file is expanded exit the Recovery Console and restart the
computer.
