Thanks again Carey. I just had a short emergency and could not respond right away. This article seems to suggest that my problem has something to do with the IDE controller that is intergrated on my motherboard. I do not have any SCSCI device on my system, and the only thing that I did replace was the old crippled disk drive? I have a scanner that I had connected thru the paraell port when I first installed this OS so maybe I'll dissconnect that and see if that works for me. If this fails, I guess I'll try to install thru WIN98 and hope that this method allows me the opportunity to specify where I want the OS located on my system. As I write this note to you I am still unable to get to the SUPPORT.MICROSOFT.COM web site, so the other articles that this one relates to will still be off limits to me.
Thanks again..... Tom J.
Windows XP Does Not Respond at "Setup Is Starting Windows XP" Message
SUMMARY
This article describes how to troubleshoot Windows if Windows Text-mode Setup stops responding (hangs) while the "Setup is starting Windows" message is displayed.
MORE INFORMATION
The following items can cause Setup to stop responding while the "Setup is starting Windows" message is displayed:
a.. An incorrect mass-storage device (such as a SCSI or IDE controller) driver is being loaded, or the driver was not written for Windows and is not compatible. Contact the device's manufacturer or download the latest driver for the mass-storage device. For additional information, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
216406 Specifying Third-Party Disk Controller Driver During Setup
b.. There is a device connected to your mass-storage device that is preventing Windows from being installed. Remove any devices (such as scanners, tape drives, removable drives, and so on) from the mass-storage device controller. If the computer is IDE-based, verify that you have the master and slave designations set properly. If the mass-storage controller is SCSI-based, verify that the termination and bus speed is set properly.
c.. The computer does not have the latest BIOS revision. Contact the computer's manufacturer or check the manufacturer's Web site. Many manufacturers have updated their BIOS revisions to properly support Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI).
d.. An ACPI Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) is being used during Setup. Force the use of a non-ACPI HAL during Setup. For additional information about this procedure, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
