When you insert a DVD disc into the DVD drive of a Windows XP-based computer,
Windows XP does not recognize the disc. For example, you do not see any files
on the disc and my computer acts as if there is nothing in the drive at all.

First check to do is the hard ware function.
Open the drive and put a disc in. Lean close to the drive and listen to the
drive. See if you can hear it physically spin up to speed, or if the drive
read light just blinks. If the light blinks, but you do not hear it spin up,
then I would bet the drive motor is dead and the drive would need to be
replaced.
If the light blinks and the drive spins up to speed, then the IDE ribbon
cable connecting to the drive may be loose. Especially if the computer has
been moved around much.
