Windows XP Disk Check error

I am trying to check C drive for errors in Windows XP Pro but get a "Windows was unable to complete the disk check" error msg. This happens after Phase 1. I have disabled the screen-saver, anitivirus and other programs in msconfig as well as the paging file to no avail. I have no problems with the other partitions. Why am I getting the error for C drive and how can I resolve this? Thanks.
 
Try Run CHKDSK C: /F/V
It will tell you that it will run on the next startup
