I have a toshiba laptop, tecra A5-S116 but I don't have my windows xp cd's
and I need to repair it. What can I do?

Tough issue, I have to keep OEM disks for most all vendors to do
repair work. Unfortunately, a "Generic" OEM disk won't always
work. Most manufacturers now include the i386 on the volume w/
Windows. In some cases you can burn that to optical media and
use the floppy disk startup set that Microsoft provides. It is possible
to "Build" up an XP disk from i386 and some other components. If
the notebook has the i386 on it you can download BartPE to build
a bootable disk that offers some Recovery Console type abilities.
I'm assuming the notebook still boots - if not you'll have to contact
Toshiba and request a replacement disk.

Try calling Toshiba to see if they'll sell you a replacement CD

Repair or reinstall? What are the problems you are trying to fix?

If this is an OEM installed XP you'll need to follow whatever repair /
recovery/ reinstall process the OEM established. Often times all they
provide is a clean restore to the state the drive was in when received from
the factory. The computer would have come with some means to restore the OS
to the condition it was in as received from the factory. This will either
be an installation CD, a recovery CD and/or a (hidden) partition on the hard
drive with an image of the drive as received from the factory. The recovery
process is invoked by a particular keystroke combination during startup.

So did you receive an installation CD or recovery CD and lost it or you're
not sure or what? Have you contacted Toshiba tech support?
