I recently purchased a new Dell computer with Windows XP Media Center 2004
already installed on it. I need the Windows XP CD to fix a problem I am
having. Either my computer did not come with this CD or I have misplaced it.
Should my computer have come with this CD?

Not necessarily. The vendor is required to provide a means to recover
the system. They have 3 options;

1. Installation CD
2. Recovery CD
3. Hidden partition on the hard drive with an image of the drive as it
came from the factory.

Check the documentation that came with the system to see which of the 3
was provided with your system.

Call them and ask for one.

Maybe, maybe not.
Dell has different configuration and some of their computers come with
recovery CDs, while others do not.
All that is required is a method to restore the computer to original
configuration.
Dell has a hidden partition for that purpose on some of their computers.

Check your invoice and/or contact Dell for details.
Rumour has it that if you did not receive a CD, you can call and ask for it
and one will be sent.

I didn't get anything with my Dell either. I called and received mine
within a few days. No charge.

Yes. Any pc should come with the disk you need to install/update/repair
your OS.

Exactly. If your hard drive crashes. You will need a real MS CD or a
vendor special XP CD. Demand one from your vendor before you really need
it. There is NO reason to pay for your MS XP CD twice.

An *extremely* misleading answer. Of course I agree that every computer
*should* come with an installation CD. But the simple fact is that many, if
not most OEM computers do *not* some with such CDs, and if you want one you
have to buy one.

"Misleading"? but you also agree?

It's misleading because most people reading your message will interpret it
to mean you're saying that any PC "will" come with the CD, and that if they
don't have have, they've somehow been cheated out of something they were
supposed to get but didn't. That is *not* the case.

Buying a computer that one would think would have such a disk and does not
is what is really misleading, don't you think? ;)

Sure. If I had my druthers, the requirement would be for any computer sold
"with" Windows to come with a complete Windows installation disk, as I said
above. I agree that what many OEM vendors do is deceptive and misleading.

But that has nothing to with my reply above, which, as I pointed out, wasn't
really responsive to the question or helpful to the person who asked.
